Whangaimoana is a stunning country retreat with its beautiful Italiante design and extensive rambling gardens. Whangaimoana (Maori for Hospitality by the sea) was built in1876 by John Purvis Russell and features ornate plasterwork and extensive use of native totara and rimu. This house has historical classification and has appeared in many books, magazines and national television. During spring many thousands of daffodils flower in the paddock in front of the house and in the valley below, as well as the garden. Large areas of sweeping gardens and mature trees invite you to wander around the property.

As a guest you'll enjoy the southern wing (1000 sq ft), which has a private entrance, ensuite bathroom, queensize bedroom, large sitting room with TV/video player, and open fire with lots of wood. A small fridge, microwave and tea/coffee making facilities are provided. We know you will enjoy the peace and quietness of this country retreat.

There are three extra rooms and a cottage available to cater for large families/groups. Children are welcome and they will love exploring the property and making friends with the animals.

Whangaimoana is a half hour drive from Martinborough and very close to Palliser coastline (see our map). Peter Jackson chose the dramatic Palliser coast to film scenes for the Lord of the Rings movies. Visit the nearby light house and seal colony and the prehistoric rock formations of The Pinnacles. Great fishing and diving is only minutes away from Whangaimoana and excellent walking and cycling opportunities abound.

The Lake Ferry Hotel (10 minutes away) is a great place to meet some local characters and enjoy fresh seafood from the restaurant.

The stunning facade features corinthian columns and ornate dentils and parapet details.

Afternoon tea will be offered when you arrive and a country style breakfast served at your dining table in front of the open fire. Fresh flowers, home baking and some sweets will help you feel at home.

The queen size bedroom featuring an ensuite and a wonderful outlook to an historic oak tree.

The bathroom features close sarked totara, deep clawed bath and separate shower.

Your own private entrance to the southern wing.

Original works of art adourn the walls, this one by local artist Sophie Bidwell.

The thing most guests comment on is the peace and tranquility that house and gardens impart.

You'll love wandering around the enormous sweeping gardens. There are discoveries to be made at every turn.
